So before I start, I would like to say that I really hope Microsoft brings back in house testing because I really feel like too many bugs are becoming rampant and go unnoticed until it affects too many PCs. The day before this happened I did install some programs on my machine, then after a restart and making sure software was installed I put it on hibernate to save some browser tabs. The next day when I turned it on the computer got stuck at the lock screen. No mouse or keyboard was working.

It booted up fine but when I got to the lock screen, it got stuck again with no mouse or keyboard and a crossed out wifi symbol. I thought maybe it was the program I installed, and luckily I knew I had actually made a restore point before.

So I booted up to the troubleshoot screen with the shift key and selected to restore to the recovery point. This however failed with an error. I ended up trying literally every other option except reset without saving files with no luck. I eventually decided to follow a guide to try and restore the registry files from the RegBack folder. Unfortunately, I was running windows which along with has a serious bug that fails to back up the registry to the RegBack folder.

I’m pretty certain the registry files became corrupt and that’s why it won’t boot. I also tried using bootrec but that didn’t work either. Edit: I actually found another restore point before a critical update, but that also ended with the same failure code 0x This thread is locked. Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. I could not able to start normally. Again I think you are unaware that reinstalling windows while keeping files requires that the installer be run in windows. This does not work if you install by booting from the USB drive. My windows installation will not boot because i think the EFI boot configuration is broken.

Anyways I left my computer alone for a day and tried to fix it again and Windows booted perfectly with no errors or issues. If anyone has update or please make a manual backup of your registry files because the RegBack service is currently broken! Sorry to anyone with this issue because I have no idea why my computer stopped and started working again with such a serious error.

From there I can only slect repair my pc pwhic goes to the same repair menu or a fresh install. I cannot reinstall windows while keeping files because the computer must be able to turn on first successfully boot into windows so I can run the installer from within windows.

Thanks, but I don’t think you understand. I cannot boot to windows to actually launch the software. I can only access the usb drive or the windows pe repair environment. If i try to install directly off of usb, keeping files is not supported. I have tried all methods but no use. Then you will start with USB and you will follow the steps of this link to repair Windows without losing your files.
