I’m only 37 pages into this book and though I admit the book looks pretty and simple to follow, I cannot express how truly terrible, disorganized and confusing the book has already been. Chapter 1 urges the reader to organize one’s photos into a file system and place them on a backup drive, NOT the hard drive.

Unfortunately, crucial information on how to do this properly, and pitfalls to avoid, was lacking and those omissions resulted in multiple duplicates of my photos in the Lightroom catalog. It’s no small task eliminating duplicates from Lightroom–something not covered in this book–so I had to wipe everything out import thousands of photos again. Unfortunately, Chapter 2 contradicts the instructions in chapter 1, advising the reader to place all photos back on the hard drive otherwise loading photos will be too slow!

That process was not as described and I lost most of my but backed up photo data. As a result of that, I had to wipe clean the Lightroom library again and import photos into the app’s catalog system a third time!

The author also advises the reader to organize the photos in a certain fashion in chapter 1, but as it turns out, a lot, if not most of the organization was unnecessary and in fact, will actually make it harder to organize them in Lightroom’s catalogs and collections system. Update: Once past that nightmare, I think the book is helpful. Great effort is made to simplify complex operations, diagrams are reasonably good, the writing is engaging.

There are a few glaring deficiencies in this book. I wanted to enlarge a photo to work on blemishes and such. I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for umpteen years and have owned books by 3 other authors – none compare to Evenings.

Excellent reference, 2 thumbs up! I have been making pictures since the mid-fifties, first with film, and then digital. For most of that time I had a wet darkroom. Lightroom is the key to making beautiful images, as well as organizing hundreds of thousands of images spanning more than 60 years. Not the best book for learning the software.

Writing is not easy to follow and I have not found it to be of much value. YouTube training videos are much better and free. One person found this helpful. Well thought out by an excellent writer. This is the book for Lightroom for photographers. Extremely complete reference book After the first chapter or so, you can skip to chapters you are particularly interested it. My must buy for each new version of Adobe Photoshop.

Martin is an outstanding and important supporter of Lightroom and Photoshop. His Lightroom Transformations: Realizing your vision with Adobe Lightroom plus Photoshop is a unique introduction to various ways to improve or enhance digital images, with hands-on demonstrations using Lightroom as the tool.

The techniques are useful across packages and he teaches the novice or intermediate photographer some of the first “transformations” to try out on your images.

It’s impressive that he got a Lightroom Classic book out so rapidly. If you know Lightroom 6 well you won’t need a new Lightroom Classic book. The strength of the book is that it’s not just a technical guide to using the application; rather it’s an appealing blend of a medium-depth exploration of the various tools, features, and configuration options, as well as a discussion of how to get things done that the photographer needs done.

This approach lets him write in a style that is suitable for reading straight through albeit at several sittings since it doesn’t come across as a simple recitation of menu structures and panel layouts. Her style is deeper into the technical ins and outs, with great coverage of darker corners or unusual situations, such as 4 different ways to move LR to a new computer, and 5 different ways to share LR across multiple machines.

Book is fantastic and helps a lot! By Hannah Pineda on September 1, I first became acquainted with Martin Evening when I purchased the Lightroom 2 version of this book in I was a very green newbie back then and had only the vaguest idea what Lightroom really did. At that time I found the book too difficult to understand and I set it aside. Since then I have learned to use Lightroom by trial and error and have established my own workflow but I made all kinds of glaring errors along the way!

I believe that Mr. Now, as I again read Martin Evening’s book I am absorbing the information and I am able to apply his suggestions to my workflow. Perhaps what I appreciate most is the fact that Mr. Evening offers alternatives and choices regarding how to apply and use Lightroom. He is not dogmatic in his approach. He shares his opinions but gives unbiased information regarding other ways to apply the features of each Lightroom module.

I can highly recommend this book to other Lightroom users — with one caution. I think the book is best positioned for someone who has used Lightroom already — an intermediate user, like myself.
